TORONTO (NEWS 1130) – Conservative Leader Stephen Harper says supervised drug injection sites like Insite on the Downtown Eastside have been formed based on dangerous policies and will make it easier for kids to access drugs.

Speaking in Toronto this morning, he says his party will do all he can to fight them.

“Canadians just about everywhere, when asked about injection sites, do not want them in their communities. The reason they do not want them in their communities is they understand this pulls the entire drug trade into that community.”

“The other parties are out there saying they’ll put these in communities, but I do not believe Canadian communities want these in their own neighbourhoods,” he adds.

Harper says the Tories have brought in legislation to make it more difficult for supervised injection sites to pop up without extensive consultation.

Health experts from around the globe have applauded Insite as innovative and effective in reducing the number of fatal overdoses.
